Camel is large, strong desert animal. Camels can travel great distances across hot, dry deserts with little food or water. They walk easily on soft sands where truck would get stuck, and carry people and heavy loads to places that have no roads. Camel also serves the people of desert in many other ways. The camel carries its own built-in supply on its back in the form of a hump. There are two chief kinds of camels i.e. the Arabian Camel ( with one hump) and the Bactrian Camel ( with two humps ). Here are some amazing facts about them:

The word Camel is an Arabic word which means ‘ Beauty’.

Camels have been domestic animals for thousands of years.

Arabian camels may once have lived wild in Arabia, but none of them lived in the wild today.

Australia is free of most of the serious diseases of Camel.

Camels can run at 25 mph (40 kph) for long periods. If their owner is in a hurry, they can kick their speed up to 40 mph (67 kph).

A 5 year old camel can carry a full load.

A camel doesn’t chew its food before swallowing it.

They need to stay hydrated in the desert, so it’s no surprise that camels can drink as much as 40 gallons of water at once and water is stored in their hump.

Camel’s stomach has three section, one of which stores the poorly chewed food.

Thirsty camel can drink about 200 litres a day.

Camels are known for spitting on people. This is a defense tactic when the animals feel threatened.

Camel can go without water for days or even months. The amount of water a camel drinks varies with the time of year and with the weather.

Deep in the deserts, camels are the only source of transportation, food, clothing and shelter.

There are more than 14 million camels in the world — most of them live in the Middle East, Asia and Australia.

Dried camel bones can be carved like ivory for jewellery or utensils.

Camels have thick, wide pads on the bottom of their feet due to which they can walk on sands without getting hurt.

A camel’s nostrils are amazing. They retain water vapor which can be returned to the body when necessary, but they can also be closed if there is too much sand or wind blowing.

Camel babies are born without humps.

A camels hump is made of fat, but the camels body can break the fat down into food and water when these are scarce.

Camels were originally adapted to the Arctic not the desert.

Camels can hold the grudge and wait for the opportunity to take revenge.
